Case Study 9

Flash 105

We viewed this comic at the Excalibur Auction in Elstree, the last in-person auction before Covid struck. We estimated the grade to be around 2.5-3.0. The colour and gloss looked really nice, but was held back by a lot of general creasing and the potential was going to be hindered by a 1 1/2" spine split at the bottom.

Once the comic had hit the price where we lost interest, the bidding went on between two bidders. Mr Ballinger eventually won the auction, and promptly passed it to us to press, before getting it graded.

All precautions were taken to reduce the likelihood of the spine split opening up further, whilst pressing the comic to its best condition possible.

Update

James Gower inspected the Flash 105 at auction and shared his notes with me before bidding started. Once more a press and clean made a much better grade than I had hoped , a real professional. - P Ballinger
